Advocacy is Using Your Voice

Use Your Voice to Build Momentum for Change.
When we’re a collective voice, we influence societal change. Early in March, we launched a grassroots letter campaign to encourage advocates to contact their representatives to urge them to Restore $5m to the California Arts Council budget that was cut last year. To date, 2,198 advocates have sent letters to their representatives. These voices added strength to the direct lobbying that led Assemblymember Chris Ward and Senator Smallwood-Cuevas to issue budget request letters to restore the funding. We are poised to act as your bullhorn should further budget cuts be announced in the Governor’s May Revise.
On Arts Advocacy Day last April, we organized over 300 advocates to meet with their representatives, armed with talking points and policy priorities. Together, we demonstrated our strength in numbers and delivered key messages at the State Capitol. Our CEO Julie Baker and CA Creative Corps administrators scored a meeting with the Governor’s office to share the impact of CA Creative Corps, highlighting its success in employing over 7,000 artists.
The ongoing work to support the arts and culture sector is critical, especially given the proposed federal budget cuts that threaten the existence of key agencies like the NEA, NEH, IMLS, and CPB. By becoming a member of CA for the Arts or CA Arts Advocates, you are helping us build momentum for change and ensure we can make a broader impact in our advocacy.
