CITY of LOS ANGELES DEPARTMENT of CULTURAL AFFAIRS (DCA)
PUBLIC ART DIVISION — REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS (RFQ)
BACKGROUND
The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), Public Art Division, is seeking professional artists to comprise its 2026 Prequalified Roster of Artists for the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) Expansion and Modernization Project.
The Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) is a major, high-tech event and exhibition venue that is owned and operated by the City of Los Angeles. It is located in Downtown Los Angeles at 1201 South Figueroa Street, and situated next to Crypto.com Arena and L.A. LIVE. In addition to hosting conventions and exhibitions, the LACC hosts major events such as pop culture and fan expos (such as Anime Expo and L.A. Comic Con) and trade and auto shows (including the annual Los Angeles Auto Show).
The LACC Expansion and Modernization project will include a new exhibit hall that will bridge over and across Pico Boulevard. This additional 193,000 square feet of new exhibit space will push the LACC’s total contiguous exhibit hall space to 750,575 square feet. The new exhibit hall will be supported by new meeting rooms, a multistory atrium lobby with a skylight, a rooftop ballroom, and a terrace and open-air garden.
The LACC Expansion and Modernization project is an architectural homage to the city’s spirit, and it will create an enhanced space for people to gather and connect that reflects the vibrancy of Los Angeles.
DESCRIPTION OF OPPORTUNITY
The LACC Expansion and Modernization project will generate multiple sites for public art opportunities. The newly renovated campus will function as a contiguous art exhibition space offering public art experiences for LACC users and visitors. DCA’s Public Art Division has assembled an LACC Curatorial Committee to lead the City’s creation of its first permanent public art exhibition as part of the LACC Expansion and Modernization project. The cohesive public art exhibition will be presented at both interior and exterior sites throughout the LACC campus. The Curatorial Committee will establish themes for the exhibition, and these will be presented during the Request for Proposal (RFP) phase.
DCA is seeking to award up to twenty (20) public art commissions for permanent exhibition at the LACC. Each public art opportunity will vary by site, construction parameters, and budget, which will be determined at the RFP phase. Individual artists and artist teams selected through this RFQ will be eligible to participate in those Requests for Proposals (RFPs), but are not guaranteed a public art commission. DCA anticipates that all public art projects commissioned through this RFQ will be completed by Spring 2029.
