        Kim Traversi Museum Education Internship

        Overview

        This internship will support the day-to-day operation and implementation of innovative, high-quality public, school, community, and outreach programs for the California Museum, advancing its mission to educate people about California’s rich history, its diversity, and its unique influence on the world of ideas, innovation, art, and culture.     

        The ideal candidate will be interested in: teaching formally or informally; participating in events or programs; and facilitating hands-on education programs. An ideal candidate has a passion for history, a talent to communicate knowledge in an engaging way, and an interest in entering the museum education field professionally.

        Responsibilities

        • Participate in leading school tours and classroom programs in the museum, engaging K-12 students in exploring artifacts and stories in the exhibits more closely
        • Participate in leading virtual school tours, engaging students across the state of California
        • Engage with members of the public at interactive stations throughout the Museum and using artifact carts
        • Support public programs to promote fun and learning for visitors of all ages
        • Support the education department in preparing materials for school tours
        • Support the education department in the development of learning materials including summer camp activities and crafts
        • Other duties as assigned

        Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

        • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
        • Understanding of and experience with virtual meeting-hosting platforms including, but not limited to Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet
        • Dedication to sharing the histories and stories of marginalized peoples often left out of history books
        • Flexibility, collaborative work ethic, and strong sense of humor
        • Ability to work well with diverse partners and constituents
        • Strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite, and interest in learning new technologies and virtual tools
        • Knowledge of California history, California State content standards, and bilingual English/Spanish are pluses
        • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination and booster(s) or an approved exemption

        Knowledge and skills developed through the internship

        • Sharing history with a public audience, particularly with K-12 students
        • Public speaking and presenting
        • Collaborating with a professional team
        • Familiarity with educational standards and the role museums play in supporting K-12 education
        • Understanding the different functions of a museum and how they work together to support a common mission
        • Introduction to how content and learning materials are developed in a museum setting

        Position

        This paid internship position is intended for a currently-enrolled student in the Fall 2025 academic term with potential extension into Spring academic term. This position is ideal for undergraduate and graduate applicants. The position will last approximately 15 weeks, 10 hours per week, at $16.50 per hour.
